Quota International of Portsmouth, NH
Donna Schefer has been a member of the Portsmouth Quota club for nearly 10 years, and she continues to inspire and motivate our members each year.
She introduced the club and district to the Academic Bowl program for deaf and hard of hearing students, sponsored by Gallaudet University. Each year Donna coaches a team of students from several seacoast area high schools. Her work with them begins in the late fall and continues with weekly sessions until the event in March. In addition to coaching the students, Donna arranges for the team T-shirts, the transportation to the host school, and any expenses incurred for food during travel. District 29 was honored to participate in this year’s event held in Manchester, New Hampshire, by providing water and snacks for the students during the competition. It was Donna who challenged the district to support this effort.
About 3 years ago, Donna helped to found a support group for deaf and hard of hearing students and their parents and other family members. The parents’ forum meets each month. Here they share information and experiences with each other, have guest speakers, and become better versed in the advances and technologies that are available to help their children. Every other month, the students attend, and during the parents meeting, there are games and activities for them. Donna has brought deaf and hard of hearing high school students to work with the younger children, and they serve as great role models for them.
Donna has a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University and is a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students in three school districts as well as being a certified educational interpreter for the deaf. She serves on the New Hampshire State Senate Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, and has performed valued pro bono work for the New Hampshire Department of Education. In addition to volunteering with Quota, her church, and through her career, Donna is a leader and participant in Relay for Life events for the American Cancer Society.
Donna’s selfless spirit is an inspiration to the members of the Quota Club of Portsmouth. We are all blessed to have her as a friend and are pleased to honor her with our 2006 Volunteer of the Year Award.
