Quota International of Narooma

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was the springboard for QI of Narooma to plan one of the “best” Quota Cares Month projects. Residents of Narooma were eagerly awaiting the release of the movie starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Bill Nighy. QI of Narooma worked with the local cinema to turn the first local screening into a major fundraising and publicity event for the club.

The premiere was widely publicized, and advanced ticket sales were strong. A near-capacity crowd attended, with five dollars for every ticket sold designated for QI of Narooma. The club also sponsored a supper for the attendees and sold tickets for a raffle prize to the excited patrons. Gathering for food and fun before the movie put everyone in a festive mood, and the film was enjoyed by all. Huge applause marked the end of the movie and of a successful evening. In the end, over $1,000 was raised for the club’s designated charity, motor neurone disease research, doubling funds raised for this cause earlier in the year.

QI of Narooma kept themselves in the news in other ways throughout Quota Cares Month. A club-sponsored book sale for the benefit of the Moruya Oncology Unit also featured a display of information about Quota International, attracting interest and potential members. A new member was installed at a media-covered monthly meeting, with the district’s Lieutenant Governor presiding and giving a speech. Later in the month, the president of the club presented the proceeds of the club’s trivia night (about $600) to the Cattle Show team at Narooma High School in support of the Year of the Farmer. Her meeting with the students—and the cows—was covered by the local newspaper.

QI of Narooma is a small club, and every member contributed in some way to the March events. They premiered a movie, but their major accomplishments are the “continuous showings” of caring for their community.
