2008 Quota Cares Month Winners

Quota International of South Bluefield

Honorable Mention Winner

March was Makeover Month for South Bluefield’s Golden Age Club, thanks to the work of local Quotarians. For many years, the Club has been a gathering spot for local seniors, who meet twice a month for lunch and fellowship. Over time, though, the house, which depends solely on contributions from private sectors, fell into disrepair, making it unattractive and even unsafe for some members.

No one understands the importance of fellowship more than Quotarians, and when they learned of the challenges the Golden Age Club faced, they met with its members to find out more about their needs. They quickly identified many opportunities to make a difference. The house needed new gutters, windows, and carpeting; the roof and handicapped ramp needed repairs; and the meeting room needed cleaning, painting, and decorating. This was more than a one-club job, and Quotarians seized the opportunity to engage the whole community, commissioning outdoor work to local contractors who gave substantial reductions in costs and materials. Meanwhile, club members and their spouses spent the month of March refurbishing inside.

A tremendous effort meant results for the club. In addition to the home makeover, Quotarians raised club awareness with a range of fund-raisers: a dinner, a roast of a local university president, a bake sale, tag sales, and a breakfast. Each was an opportunity to raise community awareness about Quota and engage local residents in the club’s events. In addition to the work they were doing, South Bluefield found the time and energy to make the most of the generated hype by hosting a dinner and fashion show for prospective members, which yielded five new members, allowing the club to add Membership Makeover to its list of March achievements.
