Quota International of Whakatane, New Zealand
Quota Cares Month—Honorable Mention Winner
It would have been easy for Quota International of Whakatane to let the weather wash out their Whale of a Swim event and ruin the rest of March. The 9.36 km open sea swimming event, which has raised about $2,000 each year for the past seven years, attracts swimmers from all over New Zealand, and even Australia, Canada, and England. The large-scale effort requires a great deal of planning and coordination with local officials. This year, unfavorable weather conditions required that the swim be cancelled, then rescheduled, and then cancelled again.
Whakatane Quotarians didn’t sink, though. Instead, supporters and sponsors donated over $5,800 for Project HOPE 2 Eastern Bay of Plenty, which helps fund the construction of a local cancer center.
Sailing was smooth through the rest of a very busy month. Weather didn’t interfere with the morning tea held in the rose gardens surrounding the home of club President Karla Hammond. Quota hosted 27 residents of the Mountain View Rest Home, who chose to make the day a “pink parade” in light of Quota’s “Share Quota’s Heart Around the World” theme. Women in pink sun bonnets and clothes and men in pink hats and shirts enjoyed tea and the company of Quotarians.
Things didn’t stop there for the Whakatane members, who attended the South Pacific Area Meetings (SPAM), and then hosted 2004-2005 International President Nicôl Lea. Nicôl arrived in time to pin her first new South Pacific Quotarian, Mary Jessop.
Media coverage and word-of-mouth provided publicity for the Quota club’s efforts, and at the end of the month, Quotarians could be confident that their hard work was worth it, rain or shine.
