2005 Quota Cares Month Winners

Quota International of Paradise, California, U.S.A.

Quota Cares Month—Top Winner

To some, Paradise sounds like a tranquil place to relax, but that’s hardly the case for Quotarians and local businessmen in Paradise, California. On March 5, 2005, this clever Quota club sponsored an unusual fund-raiser called “Boys of Paradise.” Sixteen brave men from the business community allowed the club to dress and take pictures of them as women from the 1940s. Their images were put on a flyer, and local residents were encouraged to vote with dollars for their favorite “boy.”

The results of the contest were announced at a 1940s-USO-themed gala. Many club members dressed in military attire, and the Paradise dancers, a group of teenagers studying ballroom dancing, performed for the attendees. There was also an auction featuring 100 items provided by local businesses. However, the “boys” were the highlight of the evening, donning their feminine attire one last time. The title of “Mr. Paradise” went to a “boy” in a hot pink dress, feathered hat, and rope of pearls. He had more than fashion sense, though—he raised $1,800 alone.

While this unique fund-raiser seems like all laughs, the Quota club of Paradise raised over $12,000 for the Boys and Girls Club. The event was the most successful affair they have held. Not only did the event raise money, but also provided publicity that led to the recruitment of three new members.

The club has not exhausted the opportunities for the Boys of Paradise. They are planning a 2006 Community Calendar featuring their photos and the dates of Quotarian events. Proceeds from sales of the calendar will go toward charitable donations. Thanks to this innovative club, we’ll be checking that calendar for further adventures in Paradise!
