Quota International of Morro Bay, California, U.S.A.
Quota Cares Month—Honorable Mention Winner
A Quota club can do a lot in 40 years: support tsunami relief, send athletes to the Deaf Olympics, fund-raise to make donations for everything from scholarships to furniture to sound systems and even find time to promote their club in the local Fourth of July parade (pictured above).
The Quota club of Morro Bay chose to reflect on their four decades of service to the world during Quota Cares Month, holding a 40th anniversary celebration called “Around the World in 40 Years.” The event honored charter members, reflected on previous projects, and connected Quota with long-standing community partners, while also looking forward to the 40 years to come.
Held at the Inn of Morro Bay, the event reflected Quota’s international focus. Decorations included pictures of club members in various modes of travel plus globes and maps with flags for the states and countries that have Quota clubs. Tables also displayed Quota brochures and information and the thank-you letters members have received over the years.
The program featured a series of presentations honoring Quota International founder Wanda Frey Joiner, the club’s charter members, and previous service projects. A third presentation highlighted the club’s main project of 2005, which provided support to the military, and the program concluded with an overview of the 40 years to come. Members spoke of the need to fund technological innovations in communicative disorders, provide education and training for the disadvantaged, and sponsor a new club in Nebraska.
Quota members weren’t the only ones at the microphone. Guests expressing thanks included the Mayor of Morro Bay, the President of Cuesto College, a San Luis School District speech pathologist, and Navy and Army representatives. Through the course of the evening, Quota club constituents and community members learned more about club history and gained new respect for its mission. Such celebratory reflection on the 40 years past allowed the club to look more determinedly at its quest to make a difference in the world in the 40 years to come.
