QI of Suriname: Stuka Prisiri: Enjoy Learning!
Quota continues to serve disadvantaged children in Suriname’s capital, Paramaribo, through a project called “Stuka Prisiri” (“Enjoy Learning”). Established in 2005, the program sponsors children, aged 9-13, who commit to a three-year enrichment program. The children meet with mentors every other Saturday for life skills training, field trips, and activities designed to broaden their perspectives on education and career paths.
The Saturday sessions include transportation, breakfast, group discussion, learning activities, and snacks. To further broaden their experience of the world, they go on excursions including plays, concerts, festivals, visits to local businesses, and more. The experiences generate positive attitudes toward learning and underscore the importance of personal responsibility. Participants develop to become positive influences in the community, especially among peers and family members.
Donations through Hand-in-Hand help fund the program and provide materials ranging from necessary educational supplies and food during the day, to transportation and clothing for children who otherwise could not attend. Suriname Quota also hopes to expand the opportunity to “Enjoy Learning” by establishing either a second group in a different region of the country, or a larger group in Paramaribo.
