Hand-in-Hand World Service 2013-2015

QI of Quezon City: Balik-Ugnay: Reaching Out to Families

In Quezon City, many women trying to sustain their families are doubly disadvantaged. Living in poor conditions, often with the insecure status of squatters, and with resources far below the poverty line, women are sometimes driven to petty crimes just to meet the needs of their family. When caught and incarcerated, the women leave their families alone and even more in need. Family members are often not even able to visit the incarcerated women regularly, as they struggle for survival.

Quota International of Quezon City’s new Hand-in-Hand project aims to help alleviate the distress. The club plans to teach the family members of these imprisoned women skills to help them survive on their own. They will learn to make paper bags, dishwashing soap, fabric conditioner, and other products which they can sell within their community.

The club will also attend to the physical and educational needs of the families as much as they can. They will set up a regular medical and dental mission to address health needs, establish a literacy and feeding program for the children, fund scholarships, and provide extra medical assistance to individuals suffering from hearing-related problems.

Donations will cover teacher and medical fees, various supplies, equipment, medicine, books, transportation, and food. Caring for physical as well as occupational needs, QI of Quezon City will alleviate the immediate distress of the incarcerated women and their families. With hope for the future, also, the club hopes to improve the general living conditions within the community so that fewer women will face the sorrow of turning to crime to provide for those they love.
