Hand-in-Hand World Service 2013-2015

QI of New Delhi: Personal Care for Women in Need

Quota of New Delhi has a long history with the Hand-in-Hand program. Their Quota Home for Abandoned and Destitute Women in New Delhi, founded by the club in 1983, was Quota International’s first World Service project. It has expanded over the years from a shelter for battered women to an educational and health-care haven for women and children of all ages. The home now includes a vocational and literacy program, a day care program and full primary school, and a home for elderly women. Medical needs are met through a medical clinic, a diagnostic center, and a vision center. Hand-in-Hand donations over many years have supported these growing programs.

In 2011-2013, Quota of New Delhi began to focus on an innovative project to increase hygiene and income opportunities among local women. Their project aim for 2013-2015 is to continue and expand this critical program.

Poverty prevents many women in developing nations from using sanitary products during menstrual periods. The result is poor hygiene that affects both health and human dignity. Through this project, Quota hires women from local villages to make sanitary napkins. The project provides a two-pronged benefit to the women of New Delhi. The wages empower these seamstresses to provide for their families, while the products restore self-respect to women in slums.

The project involves making two types of sanitary napkins. One kind is made of sterilized cotton and gauze for use in a local hospital. The other is made of cotton fabric left over from garment factories, which the seamstresses fold and hand-sew into products for use at home. Quota and other NGOs will purchase the cloth pads for distribution free of charge to women in local slums.

Donations will help pay for supplies, delivery, and wages. Some donations will also continue to cover maintenance and other expenses at the Quota Home, continuing Quota of New Delhi’s decades-long dedication to its original project.
