QI of Legazpi-Mayon: Stitch for a Living
In a region often hit by typhoons, many communities face difficulties in farming and fishing enterprises, which are often devastated by the storms. The “Stitch For A Living” project changes lives of entire families by training women to earn additional income through sewing.
The program trains disadvantaged women in sewing and dressmaking skills and helps them set up their own businesses. Since its beginning in 2006, the program has seen four groups of women “graduate” and enter the economy with new skills and a sewing machine. Their businesses become self-sustaining once established. The women are able to pay for the sewing machines in installments, as they receive higher earnings through sewing than they would through working in other low-paying jobs such as domestic help.
Three of the groups that completed the program included students with hearing loss; the fourth was made up of residents at an evacuation center. The result from all is a resounding success as dozens of women now stitch for a living, providing critical financial support for their families.
The next group scheduled for training includes 15 women in need, but the aid Quota provides will impact many others in their families and communities. Hand-in-Hand donations will continue to provide sewing machines and kits for participants as well as training in sewing and dressmaking. As the successful program continues, Quota of Legazpi-Mayon aims to continue expanding it to include even more women in need.
