QI of Iloilo: Leganes Deaf Resource Center
The Leganes Deaf Resource Center, established by QI of Iloilo in 1998, offers day care and preschool through high school education to children with hearing loss. Over the years, Quota has provided books, fees, school supplies, uniforms, and enrichment experiences to the children. In 2009-2011, Hand-in-Hand donations helped the club restore free transportation to the school for students who otherwise would have no way of getting there.
Because most of the students in the Resource Center suffer from malnutrition, Quota serves daily meals. A well-balanced lunch assures that each child receives at least one full meal each school day. New students typically gain weight within three months of entering the program and become more attentive in learning activities. Hand-in-Hand donations are also used to offer nutritional support to severely malnourished children in the community as well.
Quota encourages parent involvement in the program. A group of parent volunteers works with Iloilo Quota members to plant and maintain vegetable gardens in the school yard to supplement the feeding program. Parents also volunteer to prepare and cook meals at the center each day.
Hand-in-Hand donations for 2013-2015 will continue to support the feeding program and gardens, student transportation, and books and learning materials for the center library.
