QI of Cebu: Day Care Centers for Malnourished Children
Quota’s successful day care centers continue to change lives in Cebu, keeping thousands of impoverished children off the streets since the program’s inception. In addition to quality pre-school education, students receive meals, snacks, and medical care to combat widespread malnutrition that hinders many local children from achieving academic and personal success.
Quota’s first daycare center, established in 1986, is located in one of the most depressed areas of Cebu—Sawang Calero, where the villagers’ main source of income is selling dried fish. Children are provided with both education and nutritional support at a critical developmental age. The positive impact of the project led Cebu Quota to start a center in Guba in 2000, followed by a center in San Jose in 2007, both located in remote mountain baranguays. Each center, in addition to preschool education, provides feeding and vitamin therapy, periodic de-worming, immunization, and basic medical care.
Hand-in-Hand donations help pay for teacher salaries, student uniforms, and food, often the only nutritious meal a day the children receive. Cebu Quota looks forward to installing new libraries and playgrounds in each of the three centers. They also plan to construct a new building for the Sawang Calero Centre; the existing one is beyond repair, and a new structure will permit Quota to maximize space on the lot and install gardens.
With the help of Quota members worldwide, children in each of QI of Cebu’s three centers will get a stronger start in life.
