QI of Cebu South: We Share Bakery
In 2011-2013, QI of Cebu South chose a new venture for its Hand-in-Hand project. While continuing to support the indigenous Aeta people in isolated mountain areas, and to work on improving conditions in the pediatric malnutrition ward in Cebu’s public hospital, the club turned its attention to establishing a bakeshop run by hearing-impaired people.
Since its opening in June 2012, the We Share Bakery has trained 24 high school students with hearing loss to enter the baking business. Students learn to use the tools of the trade, such as industrial mixers and dough rollers, and to market their wares. Located near the high school, the enterprise has become both popular and lucrative.
Student bakers work toward mastery in bread and pastry making and the proper use of bread machines. They aim to pass a national certification test in bread production that will open avenues of employment in local bakeries.
Quota began the project by funding a teacher’s accreditation at a culinary school. After renovating a facility to house the bakery, Cebu South Quota purchased an oven and machinery, stocked the pantry, and provided start-up capital. The bakery’s success is beyond all expectations, benefiting both the community and the deaf employees.
Hand-in-Hand donations will help purchase new equipment and supplies and cover the salary of an experienced baker to work with students. In time, Quota plans to establish a second bakery in another location to include more students.
