QI of Angeles: Learn to Earn
Quota International of Angeles planned its new project based on the proverb that if you give a person a fish, you feed them for a day; but if you teach them to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. The club was concerned that two critical groups in their community, disadvantaged women and hearing impaired individuals, were isolated and made dependent by poverty and lack of skills. They planned a project to teach them to “fish.”
With the help of Hand-in-Hand donations, QI of Angeles will provide training programs in massage therapy, facial and foot spa treatment, and food cart businesses for making local delicacies such as siomai and banana chips. The club will arrange training, provide or help to acquire supplies, help the beneficiaries set up their businesses, and provide regular follow-up to ensure success.
The Angeles Quotarians see their project as an investment in the community as a whole. Besides the economic advantages of becoming self-employed and self-supporting, the individuals in the program will find their sense of self-worth rising. They will be providing worthwhile and needed services to their community, becoming less isolated and dependent, and learning to “fish” successfully for themselves for the rest of their lives.
