County Fair Pageant

The club’s favorite annual service project is the Columbia County Fair Queen Pageant—an event that piques the community’s interest and gets Quota’s name in the news and around the town with ease.

Seventeen young ladies who entered the 2003 competition first met with Quota club volunteers over Cokes to learn contestant rules and expectations. Following two Quota-run rehearsals, contestants rode in the fair parade, enjoyed a light dinner provided by the club, and competed in the pageant at the fairgrounds. Quota provided prizes for the winners, including the Queen, first and second runners up, and Miss Congeniality.

Fish Dinner

When the club wanted to provide infant-hearing screening equipment for Magnolia Hospital, they took over a local restaurant for one night and cooked up a hearty profit.

Club members convinced Dockmasters, a local eatery that specializes in catfish and is closed on Mondays, to lend them the space for a fund-raising event one Monday night. Quota volunteers eagerly sold tickets for the fish dinner, which included eat-in dining as well as take out orders. On the night of the event, club members served as kitchen help, waitresses, runners for take-out orders, ticket takers, and cashiers. At the end of the night, the club split ticket sales with the restaurant and went home with $2,545 for local service.

Significant Service

In addition to providing infant-hearing screening equipment for the local hospital, the Magnolia Quota club also makes teddy bears for the hospital, provides Christmas for a needy family, helps out with a sidewalk art show, hosts a senior citizens’ party, sponsors and volunteers for the local Special Olympics, binds old courthouse documents, and sponsors educational activities in local schools.
