Excellence in Service—Disadvantaged Women and Children

Since victims of domestic violence arrive at shelters with little more than the clothes on their backs, this club organized a "shower" to collect basic household items needed for a new beginning.

The club mailed 600 invitations throughout the community and heavily publicized the event, which honored the shelter for 15 years of local service. Club members staffed a receiving place in a local park to accept all donations. An overwhelming response provided hundreds of items and U.S.$2,400 in cash for local women in need.

The sincerity of donors brought tears to members, who were gratified by support for their project. They believe the success of the project is a result of contacting well in advance all local organizations—from 4-H to university clubs—to participate in the project.

A training program in baking and meat processing, created by the club, provided ten impoverished women with skills to open a low-cost baked goods and meat business in their neighborhood.

Club members provided equipment valued at U.S.$2,400—from hand mixers to ovens—and approached local officials for seed money and space for the Livelihood Center. The center is now a reality.

The project opened the eyes of club members to dire poverty in their community. And, thanks to Quota, the disadvantaged women in the training program now call themselves entrepreneurs.
