Getting Quota’s Name Out There

Quota International of Peterborough

Getting Quota’s Name Out There
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada hosted the International Dragon Boat Races for breast cancer survivors. Over 2000 paddlers and their supporters converged on our small city and Quota International of Peterborough was there with the support of other clubs and some very generous sponsors in our community. We are a very small club with a very tight budget and so the first order of business was to approach businesses in the community for sponsorship money so that we might afford the space, a tent and the display tables. Over the winter and spring, every club member worked on craft projects for sale in our little booth and we put together a special display about Quota International and had material from International, District 18 and our club. All too soon, the weekend came, the tents were raised, the displays were organized and the paddlers arrived from the four corners of the earth. A generous sponsor gave us pink ribbon pencils with “QUOTA CARE – QUOTA.ORG” on them. As we handed out our free pencils, we talked Quota to anyone who would listen and drew the paddlers towards the tent to spend their souvenir dollars. These women were strong, energetic, committed and enthusiastic. They have the cause, they have the drive and they have the passion – a perfect candidate for Quota. We talked to ladies from around the world and across North America. Those from Australia and New Zealand knew exactly who Quota was. Canadians and Americans found out more about Quota and we made excellent contacts. The most enthusiastic ladies were from South Africa (there were two teams). Also teams from Italy and England showed keen interest. We handed out 800 plus pencils and over two hundred pamphlets to any who had a lot of questions. The entire home crafted items had a tag attached which read, “Hand crafted with love by Quota International of Peterborough. To learn more about a club near you go to www.quotacanada.org or www.quota.org.” Despite the wind on Friday and the rain on Saturday, the enthusiasm was contagious and nothing dampened the spirits in the park. Just as a little bonus, the club made over $1000.00. All in all, the event was a tremendous success. We had a lot of fun and planted some seeds for Quota.

Quota Darwin Car Park Fundraiser

Quota Darwin

Quota Darwin Car Park Fundraiser
For over seven years Quota Darwin has been extremely fortunate to have been the recipients of the proceeds of a local market car parking collections. The Paspaley family and the Parap Village Traders Association have been generous in permitting Quota Darwin to be involved in receiving these donations, which have helped many needy individuals and organizations around Darwin over the years. Car park attendant, Bev Burrows, has worked tirelessly for the group every Saturday morning manning the gate of the car park and has become a local celebrity with her outgoing personality and ability to take no rubbish from errant parkers. Sadly the Quota sign was taken down for the last time on Saturday 21 August 2010, as the traders had changed arrangements. To mark the occasion President Jeannie Roberts presented Bev with a gift voucher and good wishes from the group.

Quota International of Weyburn

2009 Photo Contest Entry
Weyburn Caravan driver Sandra Montgomery helps a wheelchair client catch a ride downtown from her home on the south side of the city. Clients who are disabled are able to catch rides to medical, financial or personal appointments, sports events, family reunions, weddings, funerals and community events. This service allows many people to remain independent either in their own home or in a care-home facility. The Weyburn Caravan is committed to providing transportation of disabled persons in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada and surrounding area. The service originated in 1978 with a small van and was incorporated in the early 1990 when a larger bus was purchased. Service clubs, including Quota International from the Weyburn area joined at that time and each have a representative on the society’s board of directors to oversee the finances and direction of the Caravan. In addition to having a Quota member on the Caravan’s board of directors and taking it turn chairing the board, Quota International donates $1000 per year for the operating costs of the society. Quota International of Weyburn is proud to support this service in our community.

Quota International of Beenleigh

2009 Photo Contest Entry
The photo shows Charter member and chairperson for the QuoCKa program of the Beenleigh Club Moya McKeon reading to her five very engrossed students. QuoCKa Reading Beenleigh Quotarians have been conducting the QuoCKa (Quota, Cops and Kids reading together) program in local schools for year 2 and 3 students for two years. For some of these children this is the first book they have ever owned. The club involves Quotarians, police and volunteers and conducts a ceremony at parades where students are presented with their own book. The book is read to them and four other students, it has a sticker inside which says whose book it is and who read it to them. The next week on parade they present the duplicate book to their school library and the label says they donated the book to the school library. Schools report library borrowing has increased dramatically especially for the QuoCKa books, and the students are like super stars. Because of the police presence at schools on a regular basis, police and school staff are able to address bad behavior more effectively. Beenleigh Quotarians wear colourful rainbow scarves as their uniform, and if we have them on and students see us in shopping centres or wherever…they always call out QuoCKa and come say hello. The children love the police reading to them as well as male volunteers, all the students call one of the reader’s “granddad.” Very sadly one child asked him what was a grand-dad.

2009 Photo Contest Entry
Each year in the Philippines we are celebrating the Deaf Awareness Week last November 9 - 14, 2008. I was requested to attend the preliminary preparation representing Quota International of Las Piñas and other Quota Clubs also attended. The opening of the Deaf Awareness Week was started with a motorcade and ended at City Hall of Parañaque for the program. Many different deaf schools and organizations participated in the daily activities for the occasion. The most highlighted was the closing ceremony which was held at the activity center of SM Southmall, Las Piñas City on November 14, 2008. Our very own IPDG Lin Liboro was the Guest of Honor and Speaker. She was then, the Governor of District 41. The program started with our National Anthem “Lupang Hinirang”. It was emceed by a Deaf Child. The children of different schools performed their own song and dance. My photo entry “LOOK AT ME” are the deaf children dancing our native dance “Maglalatik” beating the coconut shell all over their bodies to make a sound. Also, the innocence children like an angels performing their song and dance by doing the sign language and lip reading. The children are so wonderful and unique to watch while performing. Supported by our own Quota International, Inc. and other deaf charities organizations. The Deaf Awareness Week involves national and local events promoting the positive aspects of the deafness, social inclusion and raising awareness of the huge range of local and national organizations that support deaf people and their families and friends. It is also about improving communication between deaf and hearing people, to reduce the everyday barriers and also to increase positive attitudes toward deaf people. During the week Quota International, Inc. and other deaf organizations hold activities to celebrate and conduct public information campaigns to educate people about deafness. Quota International, Inc. supported the Hearing Impaired Children their accomplishments, their issues and most of all Quotarians giving the gift of confidence.

Quota International of Manila South

2009 Photo Contest Entry
On September 26, 2009 typhoon “Ondoy” (international code name Ketsana) inundated Metro Manila dumping one month’s worth of rainfall in just 6 hours. Many have perished, many are still missing and still others left homeless. Raw television footages of the devastation left viewers dumbfounded. But what typhoon Ondoy failed to do was dampen the Filipino spirit. The sudden surge of nationalism triggered by Ondoy’s fury ignited the ‘Bayanihan’ (spirit of service and togetherness) which has not been seen in recent times. Keeping in step with the call for unity and compassion for those in distress, Quota International Manila-South members came together like beacons of light. One text message asking for help was all it took and like the miracle of the loaves of bread and five fishes, donations of clothing, blankets, canned goods, biscuits, bottled water and instant noodles came from all directions, multiplying just as fast as the floods that came. One badly hit ‘barangay’ (unit of society/small community) was Barangay Damayang Lagi who after four days of the disaster had not yet received any assistance. QIMS members ran to their aid and distributed 500+ relief goods which undoubtedly was a respite from their hunger and misery. If the families of Barangay Damayang Lagi were thankful for the generosity and support Quota International of Manila South had given them, little do they know that the Quotarians are more grateful for the chance to share of their selves thus living the spirit and motto of this great organization.

The D41 hands-on relief operations on October 5, 2009 in one of the most badly devastated areas in Luzon, the Laguna province was an eye-opener --- that in adversities, there are opportunities to share. While coordination with volunteer Quotarians from different Quota clubs in the Metropolis before the “D - DAY” was made, simultaneous coordination was likewise done with various LGUs to help us look for families in Laguna with houses under water who have never received assistance, yielded two barangays in Los Baños, who they said were the hardest and farthest to reach. We saw how pitiful their situation was, but we cannot go in deep water. LGUs assisted us to get the head of the families thru boat and gather them in dry area. We knew we made them happy. Smiles were on their faces. They were grateful. But we knew in our hearts that it will never be enough to families who were badly inundated and will be under water for the next three to six months unless relocated to a more elevated area as the schools where they were evacuated are also submerged in water. There were more, asking, begging to be given goods but we had only a thousand bags to give away. Surely, D41 Quotarians made a difference, we were happy. We wish we could have done more --- to share, and to share some more!

Quota International of Talisay

2009 Photo Contest Entry
The malnourished ward (‘malward’) of Vicente Sotto Medical Memorial Center and its patients are the recipients of Quota Club of Talisay, Philippines’ club-to-club project. Due to lack of space and inadequate medical supplies, the ward can only accommodate 7 children –ages ranging from newborn to 10 years old; these children are considered to be in their severely malnourished state or condition…and Camille is one of them… After the festivities and series of seminars during the recent 15th National District 41 Conference, the international delegates led by Past International President Toddy Silkman, the District Team led by District Governor Caroline Piad and Quota Talisay officers, visited the ‘malward’….Our delegates saw for themselves the sad plight and sorry state of both hospital and patient… Camille is an eight (8) year old girl born to parents who are both jobless, uneducated and living below poverty line; Camille has four other siblings. She was admitted due to severe malnutrition with complications in her pulmonary tract..Inspite of this, Camille seemed cheerful in her own way. Upon seeing us and upon much prodding from her guardians, she managed to give us a heartwarming smile, quite a bit conscious that her picture was taken. And upon seeing PIP Toddy, she slowly reached out her tiny and frail arm as if asking to be carried and touched. PIP Toddy was quite a new and different sight for Camille, what with her tall svelte figure, golden brown hair, white complexion and motherly aura; Camille just couldn’t take her eyes off her….To everyone’s amusement, PIP Toddy was apparently holding a bottle of water which caught Camille’s attention and signaled that she wanted it! This photo not only shows Camille physically reaching out to touch people but also symbolizes every child’s need, want and right to a proper nutrition, a stable home to live in, and responsible parents to take care of her. For a child to have good brain development, he/she must have proper and complete nutrition from birth till 5 years old; Camille may have lost this opportunity, but through constant monitoring of her health, there is still hope….

Quota International of Suriname

2009 Photo Contest Entry
Quota International of Suriname (QIS) and the Kennedy School for the Deaf have built up a special relationship these past years not only because of the funding of several educational projects for the school but more as a result of the sporting event QIS organizes once a year for these pupils between the ages 4 and 18 years .On these events pupils , teachers and Quotarians enjoy themselves outdoors on the field or in the swimming pool playing various games competing against each other individually or as a team. Two years ago we added more excitement to this sporting event by inviting a group of hearing pupils of a neighboring school to join the hearing impaired in the games which was an instant success. Not only did their participation contributed in double the fun but we also succeeded in our effort to stimulate the integration between the hearing impaired and the hearing in a natural way. This year the sporting event was held in March just around the 90th birthday of Quota . The children expressed their gratitude and birthday wishes to Quota by wearing headbands made by themselves especially for this occasion.

Quota International of Flint

2009 Photo Contest Entry
In 2007, Lake Fenton School District teacher, Kristen Polk, contacted Quota International requesting information on how to contact Quota of Flint. As a speech pathologist, Polk was familiar with Quota’s dedication to the deaf and hard of hearing. She heard that Quota of Flint established a much-needed program to provide sound field systems in elementary schools. By the time Ms. Polk contacted our club, twenty-nine systems had been purchased for area classrooms since 2003, costing nearly $30,000. Polk was aware of the advantages that sound field systems afforded students. She knew the system provided more effective classroom instruction, increasing the sound of the teacher’s voice, bringing sounds closer to the learner’s ear. She knew the system was easy to use and that the transmitter could be connected to all technical devices used in the classroom. She also knew the outcome: less discipline issues, and students, because they can hear better, stay on task. Polk knew because she used the sound field system while previously employed in a private school. Her current school district did not have the resources to provide sound field systems. In 2007-2008, Quota of Flint purchased Torrey Hill Intermediate School’s first sound field system. A second system was installed the following year, and Quota’s Service Committee is committed to providing a third system this year. Polk extended an invitation to club members to visit the school, in April 2009, to see students using the system. Five Quotarians attended to get a first-hand view of the system in action and to enjoy knowing that their gift is being put to excellent use.

2009 Photo Contest Entry
Seven year old Justise McCauley had fun buying Christmas presents for his family the weekend before this photo was taken, but he could not think of anything he wanted for himself. Justise’s Dad, Mike McCauley, said he was the only one who had not asked for anything. This quiet little boy from Matata (small township just out of Whakatane), had just finished his fifth cycle of chemotherapy to shrink a tumor in his abdomen. Quota International of Whakatane members, Wendy Tozer, Lyn Irving, and Karla Hammond arrived at Justise’s house bearing a $1200 cheque and a basket of goodies as a pre-Christmas treat for him, his twin sister, and older brother. President Wendy Tozer said the money was raised to help with the costs of traveling up to Starship Hospital (children’s hospital in Auckland) and other expenses the family has at Christmas time. Mr. McCauley said the money would go towards medication for Justise and anything else he needed. For example, his pain medication costs $80 for six tablets and sometimes Justise needs one every six hours. Justise had his last treatment in April and sadly that is his last, he has been sent home to spend as much quality time with his family and friends, he remains an extremely unwell lad but his parents are determined to give him every opportunity to join in all the activities that a boy of his age enjoys. It has been extremely humbling experience doing something small for Justise and his wonderful family.

This is a picture of Quota International of Valdosta outside the Methodist Home for Children and Youth. The Methodist Home for Children and Youth is more than a home for children, it is also a home for a host of children and family programs and services. With six sites across South Georgia (Macon, Americus, Valdosta, St. Mary’s, Columbus, and Waverly Hall), they have a range of more than 15 services. This year Quota International of Valdosta decided to help the Methodist Home out and painted 2 rooms, 2 hallways and a bathroom for them and in doing so was able to interact with some of the girls that live there. It was a great day of service and meeting new people and also allowed for getting to know Quota Sisters better!

A note from Carly Hurd: Many of you may not remember me but I remember QUOTA! My name is Carly Hurd. I attended Tamarac Elementary School and used to look forward to all the special parties that Quota gave my class! I even won the poster contest one year and Quota made up note cards with my award winning poster on the card. I believe Quota sold them as one of its fundraisers! My Mom and I were invited to a Fashion Show where I was introduced as the young girl that designed the cover of the note cards. That was Awesome! My Mom joined Quota and is now the Governor of District 27 and here I am today accepting a scholarship to attend Gallaudet College. Quota has certainly had a huge impact on me and I am grateful for all the support given my by Quota and District 27 over these many years. Can you believe that I am all grown up now and starting college? Me either! I’ll keep in touch and let you know how college life is!

2009 Photo Contest Entry
This photo, submitted by Quota International of Plantation, is especially heartwarming to each of its’ members as it highlights one of their extremely successful local service projects, college scholarships for local deaf students, and features one of their members who is also deaf interacting with the deaf son of another member! The photo shows Quota member Donna Wallace using Sign Language to communicate with Ryan Vlazny, son of Quota member Darlene Vlazny, who is a prior scholarship recipient and is still attending National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. This truly reflects making a difference in the lives of those in need –the need for communication and social interaction with an individual having disabilities, special needs and communication challenges as Ryan is both deaf and visually-impaired! Talk about a Quotarian in action! Donna needed to go beyond the “call-of-duty” to perform sign language in Ryan’s hands due to his visual impairment, a condition of Ushers Syndrome. Other members went out of their way to offer their seats to Ryan and his parents where the lighting conditions were most beneficial so that he too could enjoy the fundraising party being graciously hosted at Quota member Marilyn Steinmuller’s home. Quota International of Plantation raised $740.00 to give to Operations and everyone left understanding the true meaning of sharing and service to those in need!

2009 Photo Contest Entry
It is the first time for these boys to own a pair of slippers. Going to school is always a sacrifice walking on bare feet without raincoats and umbrellas in the rain. These slippers became the children’s talk of the day and certainly for many days to come when members of Quota International of Iloilo came with many sizes of slippers to fit all 190 pupils of the far flung Mountainside Elementary School. In their young lives it was Christmas Day in mid October! It was also a special day to compare slippers, their sizes and colors, to touch and feel their textures and designs, and study the strength and durability of the rubber to last for all the school days. It is the beginning of better days walking daily with less discomfort through the several kilometers of rocky terrain in the early morning fog to reach school on time, or trudging home through mud and sharp stones in the whipping rain. It is the beginning of dreams that can come true…to attend school despite distance and difficulties. It provides inspiration and hope that continued schooling will bring in the future the opportunity to buy ones own pair of slippers and shoes and more! It was also a day in young lives pondering the reality that in spite of the rough terrain and remoteness, caring people visited. Indeed to fully outfit each underprivileged child not just with the slippers but raincoats and schoolbags as well. There is much hope for continued schooling!

What could be more fun than a tea party? An enchanted tea party for lots of little princesses! This was Quota International of Massillon 2nd Annual Tea Party event held as a fundraiser for the Club-to-Club program. The setting this year was a local “castle” historical home, that provided the perfect location for our special occasion. Forty-five ladies and twenty-five girls ages 18 months to 8 years old attended with the girls dressed in their favorite princess costume. A talented young lady, “Princess Jennie” mesmerized the audience with musical selections from Disney themed movies and other popular songs. In this photo you see the girls attentively listening to her lovely singing. Several of the girls were inspired to join hands and dance to the music! Following the musical performance, a delicious luncheon with decorative china teapots and teacups was provided. Additional entertainment added excitement for the girls as a local dance studio performed a ballet dance and then taught the girls a routine with ribbon streamers in the ballroom of the “castle” mansion. The girls were also given a gift bag filled with fun treasures for them on their departure from a very enjoyable event. A total of $700 was raised at this event and was given to Quota International of Manila, Philippines to assist them in their club-to-club programs.

Quota International of Hermitage, PA was chartered in 2003 and as a new club they are achieving the goals that they set forth to be active in the Shenango Valley, in Mercer County. Goals have been achieved with the help of the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV of Pennsylvania which provides educational and administrative leadership, programs, services, and resources which enhance the education of all individuals to meet the changing needs of that county. Through Wendy Kinnear, the Homeless Initiative, QI of Hermitage has distributed over seven hundred pairs of underwear to boys and girls in its very first drive. The project is chaired by Sandy Joseph and was enthusiastically embraced by its club membership of 22 members and extended to become a year long program with drop off locations at a local bank, furniture store, and dress store. Hermitage Quotarian, Carole Giroski, gave this project the name of “Gutchie for Kidz” because the word “gutchies” in Pittsburg slang means underwear!

Each sign was purchased for a total of $73.00 per school with the school providing the posts and installation. The signs provide an awareness in the community of the children’s presence as they enter and leave the school, as well as, when they participate in outside the classroom activities during the school day. Also, as city residents travel throughout the city, the signs have increased an awareness of the existence of another specialty program provided by the school district. Thanks to the relentless work of the QI of Davao City members for the past five years, as of April 2009, Davao City passed an ordinance that mandated universal hearing screening for all babies born in Davao City. With this ordinance, all babies will now be screened prior to discharge from any hospital or birth center in the city. This resulted from the efforts of QI of Davao City at raising community awareness on the importance of hearing screening through continuing education programs and free hearing screening at schools and communities. Through their work, the Davao City Quotarians have pioneered a lasting and continuing program that has a great impact and benefit to our community. In addition, Quota International of Davao City members continue to work hard to identify hearing impaired people, provide means of hearing habilitation, and help children develop normal speech and language.

Most of the children in the room could hear just fine but were genuinely intrigued and mesmerized by the sign language used for everyday words. It was wonderful to expose hearing children to this type of service and to increase their awareness and understanding of individuals with disabilities.

QI of Orrville Received
Quota International of Orrville was named the 2010 Recipient of the "Worthy Works Award" sponsored by the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wayne County Community Foundation. The $1,000 award recognizes the important contributions that not-for-profit members of the Chamber make to their community. QI of Orrville was chosen not only for its support of deaf and hard of hearing individuals and of disadvantaged women and children, but also for its successful launch of the Cops 'n Kids program in 2009. OACC board members were impressed with the ability of a local service organization to combine two goals--building relationships with police officers and providing resources to improve literacy skills - into a single program. Ferenc Relle, Executive Director of the Wayne County Community Foundation presented the award to Quota President Julie Leathers and Sgt. Estero Bay Lock-Up

Quota international of Morro Bay

Estero Bay Lock-Up
Quota International of Morro Bay observed Quota Cares Month with a special community outreach: the Estero Bay Lock-Up for Camp Hapitok, Friday, March 26. The event took place at a "Jail" on the corner of Morro Bay Blvd. and Napa in Morro Bay. Estero Bay Lock-Up was ACT I. Members of the service organization and the community at large acquired warrants, enabling them to "arrest" friends. The arrest warrants included a picture of the participant photographed behind bars, information about the Lock-Up, and a donation receipt. Those arrested were taken to jail on the day of the Lock-Up, and remained there until they posted bail. Those unable to spend time in jail gave their bail money to Quotarians in order to stay out of jail. Members of Quota took shifts at the Jail, standing on the corner with "Quota Cares for Hapitok" signs to solicit donations from people walking or driving by. Other members of Quota handed out brochures and talked to passers-by about the club's goals and service projects, as well as talking about Camp Hapitok. The project was a huge success, bringing in over $3300. In addition to being able to sponsor A Day at the Bay, Quota International of Morro Bay will be able to contribute almost $2000 to the general fund for Camp Hapitok. ACT II of the Quota Cares Month Project, A Day at the Bay for the children of Camp Hapitok, will take place July 28, 2010. Camp Hapitok is a local summer camp for children with hearing and speech disorders. Campers and T.I.G.R.'s (high school volunteers) will be treated to a fun-filled and educational day in beautiful Morro Bay with Morro Bay Quotarians leading the way. They will fly kites provided by Quota and decorated during arts and crafts at camp, build sand castles by teams competing for prizes, play games at the beach, have lunch, and visit the Morro Bay Aquarium and Natural History Museum. Camp Hapitok is greatly appreciated in our community, and its mission fits with Quota's commitment to provide service which improves the lives of deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech impaired youngsters. Our members know that we are truly making a difference in the lives of the children at Hapitok by our support.

Quota of Moranbah Cupcake Drive
The Quota Club of Moranbah set aside a weekend of baking (and taste testing! ) for Life Education as their Quota Care Project. The Cupcake Drive was a first time initiative for the club and proved to be a successful fundraiser. The club was flooded with orders from across the community with over a 1000 cupcakes to bake when the final order reached our desk. The ladies were a little nervous at how we would coordinate such an effort, however a production line was soon established and cute little cupcakes were the end result! The club of Moranbah felt such a project has a two pronged approach, the members experience the fellowship and fun of getting together with a group of awesome ladies plus having the warm and fuzzy feeling of helping a great program such as Life Education.

Quota Cares Month March 2010

Gladstone/Qld. Australia

Quota Cares Month March 2010
ABOUT THE HARBOUR FESTIVAL: SUNDAY 28TH MARCH TO SUNDAY 4TH APRIL 2010 The week-long celebration that we have come to know and love as the Gladstone Harbour Festival has a humble past but a very exciting future! Over 48 years ago the Gladstone Harbour Festival was born - a one-day celebration to greet the winners of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race as they crossed the finishing line. The Festival rapidly expanded to seven days and nights, jam-packed with entertainment that we now know as the Gladstone Harbour Festival. The Festival has enjoyed a huge growth, with over 70 000 spectators visiting the annual event. Much of this success can be contributed to the range and quality of free entertainment provided at the Festival throughout the entire week. On Sunday 28th March 2010 the Rio Tinto Alcan Opening Street Parade with the theme of GOING GREEN commenced at 4pm with Floats leaving from the Gladstone Showgrounds and ending up at the Mission to Seafarers at the Marina. 7 of our 18 members participated along with President Rosemary’s husband (truck provider/driver), family and friends of Quota Gladstone Club. As we progressed through town we handed out lollies and Easter chokkies and lots and lots of Quota promotional stuff – we actually ran out of goodies before we reached our destination BUT we’ll know better next year!! As we approached the main street the announcement was as follows: “Quota Gladstone Club is all about SERVING OUR COMMUNITY and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing for the past 42 years helping the disadvantaged in our community and sharing our friendship and fellowship across the Gladstone region. Our Float is about saving energy and doing things in an environmentally friendly way BUT it’s more about our group of 18 enthusiastic women channelling our ENERGY into helping the Gladstone community. If you have a cause that needs some support…then let us know so we can channel our ENERGY your way.

MS Gulf Coast Celebrates Quota Cares Month with Annual Shenanigan's Parade
Over 5,000 people celebrated their Irish heritage in the streets of Gulfport, MS, at the 25th Annual Shenanigan's Parade, sponsored by QI, MS Gulf Coast. The popular tourist event and local favorite, is the group's largest Community Service Project of the year, and was recognized with an International Award of Excellence in 2007. The parade included more than 50 units, with marchers, antique cars, floats, bag pipes and more. Spectators came from as far away as 100 miles, to catch the unique "prizes" thrown from the many colorful units... wooden nickels, beads, mini green beer steins, cabbages, potatoes and onions. Special guests this year, included QI International President, Rosemary Hannie and District 21 Governor, Mary Lou Blackley. Quota Darwin Give Tracy Aged Care a Pamper

Quota Darwin, Australia

Quota Darwin Give Tracy Aged Care a Pamper
The Quota Darwin group of ladies helped to pamper the residents of Frontier Services Tracy Aged Care earlier this month by providing manicures and foot spa treatments at the facility as part of Quota Cares month. With their flashing heart pins on the ladies set up temporary beauty saloon and entertained low care residents by indulging them in treatments and a scrumptious afternoon tea. It was not only the female inhabitants who came along to be spoilt for the afternoon as a lot of the men also lined up. “The looks on their faces was priceless. We enjoyed it as much as they did.” stated one Quotarian.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Quota International of Morro Bay

NEW BEGINNINGS
At a program meeting on February 25, 2010, Quota International of Morro Bay celebrated “New Beginnings,” both in Morro Bay and at an orphanage called Project Hope, located in the southeastern part of Haiti. How can this happen? The first new beginning is a very happy blessing. Quotarian Tiffany Smart is expecting a baby girl in May. We, her Quota sisters, gave her a baby shower on this day, February 25, 2010. There were baby gifts, balloons flying and games to challenge those quick-witted Quotarians. Cake and special guests completed the great fun we had celebrating Tiffany and Jorn’s “New Beginning”. The second new beginning became a reality out of our deep desire to help children both here in our community and worldwide. We heard about Project Hope orphanage through a missionary who had just returned from Haiti. Through her we learned about the work being done there to give kids a home, school, food and medical care. We also learned how they are being taught to be enterprising young people who can remain in Haiti and be a part of making life there possible. Then the earthquake happened, the demands became insurmountable, and the idea was born to not only celebrate our own little new beginning here at home, but to do something at the same time and place that would create hope in the hearts of those children at Project Hope. This is how it happened. We paid the usual $17.25 for lunch; however, we were served a “kid’s lunch”. That’s right, mac and cheese! The catering staff at the Inn at Morro Bay graciously agreed to partner with us in this endeavor; consequently, we were charged only $7.00 for lunch. The remaining lunch money in the amount of $300.00, was sent via our missionary contact to help Project Hope so that the children at the Haitian orphanage might also enjoy a “New Beginning”. All members got involved in this happy event! We were able to celebrate the upcoming birth of our “Quota Baby” and accomplish some wonderful service for the price of lunch!

Quota International of Whitsunday

Margaret Roberts and Mitchell Laughton
Quota International of Whitsunday has had a very successful fund raising year and as a result the funds raised at two of their functions have been donated to the Proserpine State Primary and Proserpine State High Schools to enable them to purchased 5 Front Row Phonics Sound Systems. Year 6 student Mitchell Laughton is enjoying some of the best school marks of his life thanks to the fundraising efforts of QI Whitsunday and this innovative new system. The club become involved with the Front Row Phonics Sound System through Mitchell when he was a guest speaker at one of their meetings. Mitchell impressed the Quota members with his presentation and they could see that since he has had the audio system in his classroom how much confidence he had gained. As a result QI Whitsunday was keen to give equal opportunities to all students to advance in their studies. The Front Row Phonics Sound system involves the installation of four speakers in the classroom that projects the teacher’s voice to all corners of the room and assists not only the hearing impaired but all students and the teachers as well. A total of $9240 was donated to purchase the equipment. The money was raised through QI Whitsunday’s Annual Whitsunday Wedding Expo and the Villa Botanica Open Garden weekend. Plans are now underway for further fundraising to enable the club to donate these systems to all schools in the Proserpine and Airlie Beach area.

Quota Darwin Aged Care Christmas Parties

Quota Darwin, Australia

Quota Darwin Aged Care Christmas Parties
Just to prove that Santa did get to Darwin Australia, the Quota Darwin group brought out the Christmas bells again this year, spreading cheer to two of their favourite aged care facilities in the Top End. Terrace Gardens and Tracy Aged Care facilities rang out to the musical tones of Christmas on Sunday 6 December 2009 when our ladies attempted to sing in tune to the piano accompaniment of the talented Helen Allmich. Gifts, cake, wine, beer, soft drinks and a little bit of silly fun for the silly season were served by the members. The smiling faces of the residents in recognition of the old tunes were all the encouragement the members needed to make it an enjoyable afternoon for all.

The Best Things Come in Small Packages

QI Mississippi Gulf Coast, USA

The Best Things Come in Small Packages
After Katrina, Quotarians from all over the USA sent us "Shoeboxes of Love", which we distributed to 600 children! We have continued to "pay it forward", by collecting these special gifts each year, and distributing them to the children in our local foster homes, and emergency children's shelter. It's a wonderful tradition for which we have Quotarians to thank!

The elderly are often forgotten during the holidays - not so at the Biloxi Community Living Center! A dozen Quotarians, along with family members and special friends, joined together on the Sunday before Christmas to sing Christmas carols, "boogie with Santa", and serve the residents homemade cookies and lemonade. Santa "Q" even presented each resident a cuddly stuffed animal (which they adored!) It made our Christmas more memorable than ever - and we were not allowed to leave until we promised we'd be back!
