Quota International of Iloilo, Iloilo, Philippines
Our Quota Cares Month project
Last March 03, 2013, a Sunday, Iloilo Quotarians trooped to our Leganes Resource Center for the Deaf ( LRCD ) to host our QCMP titled, “Healthy Hearing Awareness and Silip Linis Tenga in partnership with ENT practitioners from Western Visayas Medical Center headed by a friend of Quota, Dr. Arend Arugay. We had 9 doctors, 16 Quotarians assisting and 120 beneficiaries, mostly children. For the past couple of years, our club and our ENT friends have tirelessly advocated for Healthy Hearing Awareness and Cleaning of Ears. We have brought the educational campaign through several Iloilo City schools and the medical mission through Iloilo City barangays and Iloilo towns.Dr. Arugay is at the forefront of both campaigns covering topics that include our ear structure, proper ear cleaning and care, preventing hearing loss among others. Our QCMP benefited the community because other than the children, we had parents and local residents participating in the event. For some, it was the first time they experienced this unique variation of cleaning ears in a medical mission, which normally involves examination of sickness from coughs, colds, fever. A local news article will be printed on the Daily Guardian by April 15, 2013.
How did our QCM project benefit our community?
Our QCMP’s venue was at our Leganes Resource Center for the Deaf(LRCD)and had as beneficiaries “poor families“ in the area. Even though the presence of LRCD in Leganes spans over a decade, it is mainly known as a day care facility that offers education to young deaf and advocates curbing malnutrition and better educational performance through the serving of balanced nutri-meals to students. This same advocacy is experienced by other children in the community at least once a year. Having chosen “Silip Linis Tenga“ for this year’s QCMP is a first for the Leganes community, some of a practical application and demonstration linked to our Healthy Hearing Awareness for elders, parents and children in the community. Quota International of Iloilo is known in Leganes; however, the March activity adds a new dimension to the services we offer. Almost twenty (20) members dropped in and out of the activity that bright and sunny day and yes, Evelyn Erta invited her friend HELEN BEERDA to join the club’s activity. Helen has attended a couple business meetings before participating in our QCMP activity. She was inducted into membership during our monthly business meeting last March 12, 2013. We have not experienced much growth but activities like these strengthen ties and gradually encourage members to accept responsibilities.
How did our QCM project benefit our club / members?
Admittedly, it is difficult nowadays to get perfect attendance in meetings and club activities. What is important is that we manage to have a quorum during meetings and a good number participate in activities. Since activities are calendared for the entire year, officers and members get the chance to offer themselves in activities closest to their hearts and in a way get to rotate in the acceptance of leadership roles and assistance a member may provide for a club activity. Of late a handful “in active members“ have shown renewed interest in attendance and participation and voila! We have Officers lined up for 2013-2014….am sure this signifies an improvement in morale!
