Stacie Poritz has impacted our Club and the Community immensely! Stacie has gone above and beyond her role as teacher at Westchester Elementary. For the past several years, she has taught her classes how to perform songs in sign language and took them to perform those songs at various festivals, school concerts, and Florida Marlins Baseball games. Then, she turned her class of signers into a club. She gave students in grades 2 through 5 the opportunity to learn this beautiful language and give back to their community.
In Fall of 2011, Stacie Poritz began the Kids-Q, Quota/Singing Hands of Westchester Elementary. She gave her time weekly to teach the children the art of sign language, as well as the reward of community service. Since starting the club, Stacie has led them to perform in parades, at Marlins games, in school concerts, in festivals around the community, and even at Universal Studios CityWalk, in Orlando. She also arranged for our annual Signing Santa to be held at Westchester Elementary so over 120 Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in Broward County could meet and communicate with Santa and have a fun holiday experience. She led her club and their families to donate reading books, coloring books and crayons to give to the children visiting Santa.
This year, as the club continues, Stacie has set up a connection with the Ronald McDonald House of Fort Lauderdale. The students have been collecting pop tabs to donate to the house, where families stay near the hospital to be near their terminally ill children. They also go on field trips to volunteer and interact with the families staying there.
Stacie Poritz is not only a wonderful and active volunteer, but she is also showing children the satisfaction and rewards of volunteering in the community.
