Kent Valley, Washington, USA
Quota International of Kent Valley unanimously nominated Toddy Silkman for this year’s Volunteer of the Year. Sometimes we forget to honor the most obvious. Toddy Silkman has been a member of Quota for 28 years. She founded the Kent Valley club in 1991 and has held every office in our club, been Governor, West Area Director, Treasurer and President of Quota International, but more than that she has lived her life as a giver and volunteer.
Toddy is a driving force in our club and is the go to girl when any questions come up. She takes on a tremendous amount of responsibility but does not hesitate to train or mentor new members. She is passionate about every service project no matter how hard or unappealing they might be (ex: cleaning the highway of litter) and participates in all of them. Our main fundraiser each year is a dinner auction and Toddy volunteers to store all the items for the auction. Every room in her house if full of items for months and she never complains. If a need in the community is presented at a club meeting you will see Toddy with her calculator out looking at the treasurer’s report and seeing how we can fulfill the need and she usually finds a way.
In addition to her work with Quota and her community Toddy is a compassionate giver to her friends and family. When her manicurist was unable to pick up her baby at day care due to her hours at work Toddy willingly picked her up and brought her to her salon. She continues to do this to this day and the girl is now 12 years old and Toddy has become very attached to the family. Several years ago Toddy’s brother had a head injury and developed Alzheimers and needed someone to take care of him. Toddy took him in and lovingly assisted him with all his needs until his death 2 years ago.
For these reasons and many more our club proudly nominates Toddy Silkman as our Volunteer of the Year.
